Hands Up, Don't Shoot by MrSynnerster Hands Up, Don't Shoot by MrSynnerster

I’m not really someone who mixes his political views with my art, but good grief. It’s a sad state of affairs, when every time I watch or read the news I feel like I’m watching/reading a piece of fiction set in a Dystopia future.

I love this piece. I feel like your message is right on target and probably, unfortunately, still relevant in the future. The composition created by all the lasers and guns pointing at your subject achieves this. Also the details in the city, the equipment the police use and the vehicles give the feel of a well lived in, gritty, futuristic city.
---

And my critique would be to push this composition a bit further.

There is not a lot of distinction between the foreground, middle and background. For one, all your elements share a similar color scheme (black and white). This also makes it harder to get the feel of depth or distance.

One remedy would be to make the background (the city backdrop) less saturated or less focused... like depth of field from a camera. The details are way to sharp and they want to compete with the foreground elements.

Also the main subject could be a different color than other elements. Let's say all the uniforms of the police and their vehicles are shades of black, while our main subject is wearing all white... or red. Or the police could have a more military look...

Compared to how the riot police looked like in Ferguson.

Another remedy, could be changing the lighting to focus more on your main subject. Heck, a soft, very diffused spotlight might work. While the main subject is well lit and his details are vibrant, all the other subjects outside him would be in shadow, their details slightly less evident.

---

Anyways. All these things are easier said than done... rendering some elements separately and compositing them in Photoshop may help! But I love this piece. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

It get even more messed up when you remember the series of racial mass shootings recently.

I imagine our ancestors may have thought the same thing. But they didn't give up.

Usually I say "try not resisting arrest,"
but the one I find disturbing is the recent incident with a man who had a carry permit, and was compliant, yet still got shot?
WTF does it take?

Unfortunately, I have no idea what's it going to take to change things.

Most of these cases are people who can't grasp the fact the yes, the cops can put their hands on you.
Disobeying the lawful commands of a police officer is a crime in itself.

That said, why shoot a guy who is doing everything right?
I don't know, I wasn't there, and there's no vid of the actual shooting.

Actually there is...
It worked out legally but it shows the problem with police training.

I was unaware of the South Carolina one---if that cop was that fearful, he shouldn't be allowed to own a gun, much a badge.
However this is the reason dashcam and body cams are a good thing.
The fat-face newsboy got on my nerves too.

I meant the more recent Minnesota case, there's no vid I'm aware of...I'm starting to think a cop "gun cam" might be a better choice.

This is why video is good.
That was some flat-out lousy police work.
I'm not a cop, but I've had shoot/don't shoot training and I can tell you that was beyond stupid.
On the other hand...

Do you know in the Cyberpunk game that is one of the things that they point out about their firearms.. Well legal ones.. They have "guncams" attached to the weapon with the video being something that can be used in either prosecution or defense of a case...LMAO!

I've seen tactical weapons that have scopes, laser pointers, flashlights, why not a camera?
Of course it wouldn't matter if cops had those weird guns from the anime "Psycho Pass", tragic mistakes would still happen because humans gotta human.

But thats the one thing that we take with us into any system. New or otherwise, our flawed humanity.... Sigh. But we must keep striving, moving forwards...
